1 · The honest landscape
Specialist recruiting works differently than every other position. A college carries only 1–3 scholarship specialists total, and that spot might open once every four or five years. So the number of true full-ride offers to high-school kickers each year is small — and that's not a knock on your athlete, it's just the math.
⚖️ The reality every family should hear: most college kickers and punters start as walk-ons or "preferred walk-ons" (PWO) and earn a scholarship once they win the job. A PWO offer at the right school is a real, common, and often smart path — not a consolation prize.
What just changed (2025) — and why it matters
The House v. NCAA settlement reshaped college sports as of July 2025. Two things families need to know:
- Scholarship caps are gone, replaced by roster limits. Football's roster limit is now 105 (it was an 85-scholarship cap). Schools that "opt in" can now fund scholarships all the way up to that roster limit.
- The good: more schools can fund a specialist scholarship than before. The catch: the roster is capped at 105, so every spot is competitive, and walk-on/PWO offers remain the norm for specialists.

2 · How specialists actually get recruited
Here's the part most families don't know: college coaches don't scout high-school specialists the way they scout skill players. They can't watch every kicker in the country. Instead, the specialist world runs on independent ranking camps that evaluate and rank kickers/punters nationally — and coaches trust those evaluations.
The three names coaches trust
- Chris Sailer Kicking — the top training/ranking program since 1999; national rankings + invite events that are "timed to capture the attention of college coaches."
- Kohl's Kicking — "the single biggest stage" and "the most trusted evaluation resource by college coaches"; national showcases with charted results.
- Kornblue Kicking — the "Fab 50" list is actively promoted to college coaches by email, phone, and social, helping dozens earn scholarships each year.
Getting evaluated and ranked at one of these is the single biggest exposure lever a specialist has. It's how a coach in another state even knows your athlete exists.

3 · Your recruiting packet — film + stats + ranking
A coach makes a first cut in about 30 seconds. Give them everything they need, fast:
- Film that shows the truth: multiple angles, the full operation (snap-to-kick), ball flight against a distance backdrop, and — for punters/kickoffs — hang time on screen. Show makes and a couple of long ones. Keep it tight (2–3 min).
- Verified stats: FG make % by distance and hash, longest, operation/get-off time (the metric every coach asks for), kickoff hang + distance, punt hang + net. Charted, dated, credible.
- A national ranking or camp evaluation (see Section 2).
- Academics: GPA, test scores, intended major — this is leverage (more on that below).
4 · Getting in front of coaches — the playbook
Specialists must self-advocate. Coaches expect the athlete to reach out — it's not pushy, it's the process. The steps:
- Build a simple recruiting profile (film link, stats, ranking, academics, contact, coach references).
- Email coaches directly — the special-teams coordinator or recruiting coordinator. Personalize each one (name the school, why you fit), keep it short, lead with the film link + key stats + your camp schedule.
- Attend national camps to get ranked, and college camps where you can be evaluated in person by that staff.
- Update coaches every time you have new film, a new ranking, or a new PR. Consistent, professional follow-up wins.
- Cast a wide, realistic net across levels (next section). One dream school is a plan to be disappointed.
💡 Template that works: "Coach ___, I'm a 2027 K/P from Oahu. 3-yr varsity, ranked ___ at [camp], 55-yd FG range, 3.9s+ kickoff hang, 1.3s operation, 3.8 GPA. Film: [link]. I'll be at [camp/your camp] on [date]. I'd love to earn a spot in your program." Short, factual, film-first.
5 · Finding the RIGHT fit (not just the biggest name)
The best situation for your child is rarely the flashiest logo. Weigh fit over prestige:
- Opportunity / depth chart: is the current kicker a senior (spot opening) or a freshman (blocked for years)? A clear path matters more than the conference.
- Academics & degree: the degree lasts far longer than the career. Strong grades also unlock academic + need-based aid that can beat a partial athletic offer.
- Development & coaching stability: will they get coached and get better? Is the staff likely to stay?
- Total cost: a preferred walk-on with academic money at the right school can cost less and develop your child more than a "name" with no real path.
The levels — honestly

💡 Parent takeaway: the goal is the right four years — plays, develops, graduates, fits. Chase fit and opportunity; the level sorts itself out from there.
6 · NIL & the new money era — navigating it
NIL (Name, Image & Likeness) has been legal since 2021, letting athletes earn from endorsements, camps, social media, autographs, and appearances. As of 2025, schools that opt into the House settlement can also pay athletes directly (revenue sharing, capped around $20.5M per school in year one).
The honest part: that money is overwhelmingly concentrated on quarterbacks and skill stars. For most specialists, NIL is modest — real, but not life-changing, and it should never drive your college decision.
How a specialist actually builds NIL value
- Be elite and reliable — the value follows the performance and the position winning games.
- Build your own brand — a clean, authentic social presence + camp/lesson work is where most specialist NIL actually comes from.
- Understand the fine print — NIL is not a scholarship, collective "promises" can evaporate, and NIL income is taxable. Read every deal; involve a parent.

7 · The timeline (by grade)
