The Science of Becoming Lethally Accurate

Distance is earned through clean contact. Accuracy is built through repeatable mechanics. Here's exactly how a kick works โ€” the position, the physics, the fixes, and the strength that powers it โ€” written for kickers and the families supporting them.

The contact position โ€” side and behind view of a kicker at ball contact with 8 coaching checkpoints

The moment that decides everything: the contact position. Master these 8 checkpoints and accuracy follows.

1 ยท The Contact Position โ€” the frame of every great kick

A field goal is won or lost in one hundredth of a second โ€” the instant your foot meets the ball. Everything before it (the approach) exists to arrive at this position, and everything after (the follow-through) proves you did it right. The 8 checkpoints:

2 ยท The Physics โ€” what actually creates distance and accuracy

Distance

Ball speed off the foot is the product of three things:

๐Ÿ’ก Why "smooth beats hard": muscling the kick breaks the sequence and rushes the plant, which reduces foot speed and ruins contact. Distance comes from a clean, well-timed strike โ€” not effort.

Accuracy

The ball travels in the direction of your plant foot, your hip rotation, and your follow-through โ€” in that order of influence. Accuracy is repeatability: the same plant, the same contact point, the same finish, every rep. That's why we chart every kick โ€” you can't repeat what you don't measure.

3 ยท Fix Your Miss โ€” cause & correction

Every miss has a mechanical cause. Find the pattern, fix the cause (for a right-footed kicker):

MissLikely causeThe fix
Wide LEFTOver-rotating / pulling with the hips, plant foot aimed left, or an outside-in swing (hook).Plant toe at the target, swing straight through the line, don't yank the hips past the ball.
Wide RIGHTPlant too close/under the ball, hips stall (don't rotate through), pushing it, or leaning back.Full follow-through toward the target, drive the hips through, check plant-foot placement.
SHORT / low / blockedStriking too high on the ball (topping it), plant too far back, decelerating at contact, weak hip drive.Strike just below center, accelerate through contact, get the plant beside the ball.
InconsistentContact point and steps vary rep to rep.Lock the approach (3 back / 2 over) and chart contact until the pattern tightens.

4 ยท Strength & Power โ€” built for kickers

A kicker's power comes from the hips, glutes, hamstrings, and core โ€” and durability comes from taking care of the hip flexors, groin, and knees. This is 2 focused sessions a week plus daily mobility. Form first, load second. (High-school ages: master bodyweight and technique before adding real load. Younger athletes stay bodyweight + med-ball.)

Day A โ€” Power & Posterior Chain

Day B โ€” Explosive & Hip Power

Daily โ€” Mobility & Prevention (10 min)

Why each piece matters (the whole point):

5 ยท How the best programs build accuracy โ€” and how we do it here

The top national programs share one thing: they measure the same way, every time, and chart everything. Chris Sailer Kicking rates athletes on a standardized evaluation (current skill, projectable potential, performance under pressure). Kohl's Kicking charts every kick and posts the bests on a leaderboard. The lesson is simple โ€” what gets measured gets better.

That's exactly why The Kicking Lab tracks every rep: make % by distance and hash, Center %, dispersion (where your misses cluster), hang time, kickoff depth, and punt operation. You see your patterns, we fix the cause, and the numbers climb. That's the whole loop: diagnose โ†’ prescribe โ†’ train โ†’ measure โ†’ improve.

For families ๐Ÿ‘ช

You don't need to know the mechanics to support your athlete โ€” just know this: their improvement is measurable, their training is structured, and their body is being built to last. Every session has a purpose, every number tells a story, and you can see the progress right alongside them.
